SMOKING ON TRAM

TWO MEN FINED ARGUMENT WITH CONDUCTOR Smoking in the non-smoking portion of a tramcar is an expensive business. The privilege cost Sidney Fugal £1 on that charge and 10s on a charge of disorderly behaviour, and Wilfred Herbert Wilson, on a charge of smoking, at the Police Court to-day. A plea of guilty was entered. The conductor of the tram said that Fugal, Wilson and another had refused to pay fares, made a row and smoked in the non-smoking compartment. They also “slung off” at witness when he asked them to go to the smoking section of the car. There was a woman in the car at the time. Fugal: I wasn’t using bad language but I was smoking. The Conductor: Yes, you were. The motormau gave evidence along similar lines. Fugal asked if he could get his name suppressed. “For special private reasons,” he said. Mr. Hunt refused. Fugal was fined £1 on the first charge and 10 on the second. Wilson was fined 10s.
