SLY GROG SELLER FINED WORST CASE IN CITY “The worst case of sly-grog selling in this city,” was the opinion of SubInspector McCarthy, when John Davis, a storekeeper, of Grey Avenue, was charged with a breach of the Licensing Act. Davis’s place was fitted up as a cellar, it was explained, and he was carrying on practically as an hotel trader. Two constables who went in for a drink were served. Davis was fined £25 on one of two charges, Mr. Hunt saying the penalty would have been more severe if defendant’s health had not been so bad.
