In the Market Place

i RAIN INFLUENCES BUYERS

GRAPES PLENTIFUL The rain of the past 24 hours had a depressing effect on sales in certain sections of the City Marts this morning. Fruit met with a rather dull sale. Vegetables sold freely. The demand for apples is steady, although there is very little life in the market at the moment. Fears meet with a somewhat similar reception. Grapes are coming forward in large quantities, and outdoor grown Te Kauwhatas are becoming increasingly difficult to quit at satisfactory prices. The crop is reported to be the heaviest on record, and prices are the lowest for 20 years. llutt tomatoes are still coming forward freely and the market for all grades remains on comparatively low levels. A fresh shipment of Californian oranges came to hand over the week and prices tire slightly lower. Banaaias are scarce and the market is very firm. Heavy supplies of potatoes are coming forward to the marts and the market, as a result, has a rather weak tone. Pukekohe growers have been particularly active during the past week or so in sending consignments of the autumn crop forward. Most varieties of field and ,garden produce meet with a steady demand. Short supplies of eggs meet with a firm market. Farmers’ butter is offering in moderate supply to sell at late rates. The rain of the past 24 hours interfered with the supplies of poultry, and there was a rather short market. Values generally as a result were firmer. Choice cockerels and heavy hens met with brisk competition. White Leghorn hens getting over the moult sold freely on a very firm market. Pullets were penned in slightly more than average numbers and prices showed an easing tendency. Good turkeys meet with a steady inquiry, but supplies are limited.
