SMALL DEBIT BALANCE

ONE TREE HILL’S YEAR HEAVY UNFORSEEN ITEMS For the first time for some years the general account of the One Tree Hill Road Board has closed with a debit balance, according to a statement of accounts submitted to the board last evening by the clerk, Mr. A. Leese. This debit of £526, however, was just covered by the proiiortion of outstanding rates due to the general account. As the year began with a credit balance of £6OB, payments totalled £1,134 more than receipts. This result was due principally to the heavy reduction in tho general rate in the past two years, from Is Gd to Is Id. The public works expenditure totalled £9,OSS, against £7,795 allocated. it was found imiiossible, without neglecting the streets and footpaths, to work within the estimates, even with the aid of the vote for kerbing and channelling, which was diverted from its original purpose. Mr. Leese felt it his duty to point out the necessity for providing an adequate sum for street and footpath maintenance when preparing the estimates.

Rates had come in somewhat better than in the past two or three years. Of the £22,923 levied £21,332 was paid by March 31. The total rates outstanding amounted to £1,962, against £2,497 last year. This position must be regarded as very satisfactory. The chairman reported that the total value of building permits issued during the past year reached £102,441, against £130,431 in the previous year, a decrease of £27,990. Of the permits, 81 were for dwellings and flats, representing a total value of £82,629. The total revenue derived from permit fees was £2OS, against £279 last year. Nine permits, involving £2,075, were issued during the past fortnight. The traffic inspector reported that of the prosecutions taken during the year fines totalling £ll3 were inflicted in 71 cases. In the licensing period 655 drivel's’ licences were issued, the- net revenue amounting to £ISB. ‘
