APPRENTICE STRUCK
RACING-STABLE INCIDENT , (from Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, To-day. Charged with an assault on Frank Thompson Bentley, aged 16, a racingstable apprentice, Harold James Tinker of Te Ttapa, appeared in the Magistrates Court at Hamilton yesterday afternoon. Bentley said that Harold Tinker had icome to work with his brother, Mr A Tinker, two months ago. Until then the apprentice had had no trouble but he had disobeyed instructions given him by Harold Tinker, who had then hit him in the face. Twice before he had disobeyed orders and been kicked for it. Under cross-examination Bentley said that several pieces of skin had been removed by an open-handed blow on the face, but Constable Allen said he showed signs of having been struck with a clenched fist. Harold Tinker admitted having hit Bentley, but said that the boy had inflicted further injuries upon himself. He was fined £2 and witnesses’ costs, the magistrate saying that defendant knew the boy was only an apprentice and had no right to touch him.
