There were lively scenes in Yaletta following the release of Dr. Misfud Bonnici, a member of the Malta Parliament, who was imprisoned on April S ‘’during the House’s pleasure,” in connection with the publication of an alleged distorted version of a speaker’s statement in connection with the politico-religious question which is now being investigated, and also that of Signor Salafit. an editor, who was also ordered to be detained “at the House’s pleasure” on April 5 for an alleged breach of privilege. The Government supporters and their opponents gathered in strength and paraded the town threatening disturbances. The police intervened, in most cases successfully, except outside the Constitutional Club, where the Nationalists who were passing carrying a black flag shouted. “Down with England.” Members of the club rushed out, destroyed the black flag, and hoisted the Union Jack and the Maltese flag, and sang “God Save the King.”
Eventually order was restored. One arrest was made, that of Alfred Bencini, an ex-soldier, who allegedly shouted, “Down with England.”
