Throats Cut to Save Their Lives

MEN WHO WERE CHOKING IMPROMPTU “OPERATIONS'’ (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 10.5 a.m. LONDON, Wed. Two remarkable cases of tracheotomy have been reported almost simultaneously from the Continent. An artisan at Copenhagen named Hansen, who was choking with a piece of crust in his throat, had the presence of mind to make a pocket-knife incision in his throat, which enabled him to breathe until a surgeon removed the obstacle. The other case came from Budapest. Professors Balint and Pollachek, the latter a noted throat specialist, were conversing when Professor Balint took a fit, under which he was suffocating. Professor Pollachek made an incision in his throat with a penknife and saved his life.
