BOROUGH PROGRESS
WORK AT MOUNT ALBERT MAYOR’S REVIEW A review of the work of the Mount Albert Borough Council for the past two years was made by the Mayor, Mr. L. E. Rhodes, at last evening’s meeting of the council. Mr. Rhodes said that new buildings erected during that period numbered 267, thus bringing the total number of dwellings in the borough up to 4,716.
Twelve miles of streets had been laid down to permanent levels. Of this length, four miles were essentially main roads, including the New North Road from the Ivingsland post office to the Mount Albert railway station, and the Mount Albert Road, both of which had been put down in concrete. The number of roads dealt with totalled 41. and eight miles of residential streets had been permanently constructed. Both stormwater and sewer drainage had been materially advanced. The largo combined sewer and stormwater drain to the Mount Eden boundary at Parrish Road had been completed, and the Drainage Board was constructing the sewer to the Edendale terminus, in addition to carrying out the necessary improvement works to Meola Creek. This would give relief to the stormwater flooding, and would enable the council to complete the sewer drainage reticulation in these areas. About five miles of sewer drains had been laid.
Over nine miles of mains had been laid new. or lifted and replaced to enable road construction work to be carried out. Four-inch mains were now available in practically all streets for fire-fighting purposes. The quarry purchased and opened by the council some five years ago continued to give good results. During the period some 19,000 cubic yards of metal and chips had been supplied at a cost well below current market rates, and 63.000 lineal feet of stone kerbs had been cut.
