MR. BELL EXTOLS TAX ON PETROL BENEFITS TO SETTLERS (SUN’S Special Reporter.) OHAEAWAI, To-day. “There is a strong movement on I foot for the lowering of the petrol tax, and I warn you it is in the interests of e*ery settler to fight it,” said Mr. A. Bell in his final campaign speech for the Bay of Islands byelection here last evening. The candidate claimed that the petrol tax had contributed largely toward the good roads in the North. Mr. Bell also professed knowledge of this year’s highway plans, predicting that from 2,000 to 3,000 miles would be added to secondary highways. Since the institution, two years ago, of the outlying ’districts fund of the Highways Board, something like £50,000 had been allocated annually over the Dominion for backblocks settlers, of which the Bay of Islands received from £12,000 to £15,000 yearly. With the expenditure of the coming year’s money there would not; be a settler without •wheel access in the whole of the North.
