RAN AMOK ON LINER

FUGITIVE TRACKED BY RADIO TEAR GAS USED IN CAPTURE An extraordinary story of an alleged fugitive from justice being tracked by -wireless and running amok among the first-class passengers of a big Atlantic liner on the high seas reached Liverpool recently, says an exchange. The ship was proceeding from New York to Boston when the wireless message was received. The wanted man, who appeared to realise what was impending, rushed off to his cabin. There he was found stripped to the waist and armed with an open razor. He dashed past two men who tried to wrest the razor from him and escaped on to the saloon deck, where terrified passengers scattered in all directions. Driven back to his cabin, the man locked himself in. As the ship was approaching Boston it was decided to leave the man to himself and to maintain a close guard on his door. Police officers came on board at Boston, and when they heard of the man's dangerous demeanour they resolved on an ingenious expedient. They pumped tear-gas through the keyhole into the cabin, until the prisoner showed signs of yielding. They then burst open the door. The man, with the strength of a. giant, hurled himself at the intruders. and with the razor slashed , open the tunic of one of the officers. who was lucky to escape personal in- ! juries. The man was soon overpowered and removed into custody.
