MAY NOT MARRY ITALIAN PRINCESS
Pope Shatters Royal Romance (United- P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Associationj Reccl. 9.45. LONDON. Monday. THE abandonment of the marriage of King Boris of Bulgaria with Princess Giovanna of Italy has caused disappointment in Sofia.
The Pope was willing to sanction the union if the Princess remained a Catholic, and the Premier, Signor Mussolini, suggested that the heir to the Bulgarian throne be baptised in the
Orthodox Greek Church, provided that any other children be brought up as Catholics.
King; Boris, however, refused to bind other children in this manner, so the Vatican has declined to sanction the marriage. King Boris 111., who is now 35 years of age, has eai'ned for himself the reputation of being the most disappointed Royal lover in Europe. On numerous occasions his engagement to one or other of the eligible princesses has been rumoured, or definitely announced, only to be subsequently broken off. King Boris succeeded to the Bulgarian throne on October 3. 1918, on the abdication of his father. King Ferdinand. According to the Bulgarian constitution, the sovereign must profess the Orthodoz religion. Princess Giovanna. who was born on November 13. 1907. is the third daughter of the King of' Italy. Of her two elder sisters, Princess married the Count Calvi di Bergola and Princess Mafalda married Prince Philip of Hesse. She has one younger sister, Princess Marla, born in 1914.
