Threat to Peace

INTRIGUES ON INDIAN FRONTIER \fghan Factions Seeking Help (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United Service) Reed. 9.5 a.m. CALCUTTA, Monday. PEACE on the frontier is jeopardised by the rival claimants for the Afghan throne appealing to tribes on the British side of the frontier to participate in their civil war. The first definite indication of trouble became apparent four days ago.

LTXTHERTO British political officers have kept the tribesmen quiet, but one section of Afghans has actually addressed a firman to the Mohmands and Afridis, while the opposing section has circulated a similar appeal to the Wazirs and Mahsuds. Political officers are vigorously pur-

suing these distributive agencies which, if unchecked, may produce considerable unrest ill the tribal areas, leading to complications and the need of protective action. Afghan combatants drifting into India are promptly disarmed. Movements of Afghan traders and officials into India are being discouraged.
