COUNTY INDEBTEDNESS
OPOTIKI COUNCIL MEETS (From Our Own Correspondent) OPOTIKI. To-day. At the monthly meeting of the Opotiki County Council, held on Friday, the chairman, Mr. J. 11. Reid, said good-bye to Cr. Sapbv, and thanked him for his services to the county. The Minister of Public Works said that investigations into county indebtedness would be made during the year by the Lands Department. The Government had no legislative authority to take over the Upper Waioeka special loan of £4,400. On the suggestion of Cr. Small it was decided to write to the Raglan County Council asking for particulars of an instance in which a similar problem had been overcome by the Government making a subsidy of £30(5. The Postmaster-General refused a request that the Waimana post office should be transferred from the Gisborne to the Thames postal district. The sum of £3O was granted to the Opotiki Borough Council for work done at the Opotiki Cemetery. In connection with river erosion on the Otara Road, the council resolved to meet the settlers concerned. A grant of £l5O for a deviation was made by the Public Works Department, the chariman saying that £ 300 had been promised. It was decided to write to the Minister of Public Works asking that the Oponae Bridge be replaced immediately. On the suggestion of the engineer the council agreed to widen one end of the Waiotaki River bridge. Councillors stated that the half-mile section of experimental tar-sealing was a failure. The clerk reported that £13.000 out of a total rate struck of £21,000. had been collected. The overdraft stood at £7,200.
