The Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, in answer to a question as to whether there was any truth in the rumour that the railway works at Palmerston North were to be discontinued. would say nothing beyond the fact that a number of Ministers would visit that town on "Wednesday. The deviation at Palmerston North was one of the original proposals of the Hiley scheme in 1914. It was authorised for the purpose of diverting railway traffic from the centre of the town of Palmerston North and to enable modern marshalling yards to be constructed. The original estimate of the cost was £40,000. Work was started in 1926. The undertaking includes the construction of 62 miles of double track railway, large up-to-date goods j-ards and passenger station. It involves a large amount of excavating- and banking.
