CARPENTER COULDN’T GET WAGES TV/0 YEARS PROBATION Because he was penniless and could not get his wages from his employer, Leslie Robert Stewart stole a suitcase, clothing, a gramophone and two records from a bach at Milford. Stewart, a carpenter, aged 23, came up for sentence before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court this morning. He was represented by Mr. J. F. W. Dickson.

Chief-Detective Hammond said Stewart was living next door to a bach at Takapuna. On March 26 he entered the bach and stole the suitcase and clothing. Next day he took the gramophone and two records. They were the property of Douglas Coutts and were valued at £S 10s. Mr. Dickson said accused was a carpenter in straitened circumstances. His employer had not paid him his wages, and he had no food. He had sold the articles for £5. He had paid £3 off a debt and bought food with the other £2. The Chief-Detective: We know nothing against him but this. He seems quite a decent young man. Mr. Hunt admitted Stewart to probation for two years and ordered him to make restitution of £5.
