IN THE NECK LAYERS AT RANDWICK Not for nearly 20 years have the bookmakers experienced such a losing day as they experienced at Randwick on Saturday week last. They lost so much money, so they report, that one day of outsiders would not enable them to recover the losses. Things looked ominous for the members of the Ring when Bagpipes stood up after hitting the hurdle in the front of the judge’s box. Bagpipes was a hot favourite, and his contact with the hurdle probably affected the candidates behind him more than it hindered Bagpipes himself. Then when the favourite was left at the post in the second race, the second favourite annoyed the bookmakers by

his win. The Doncaster Handicap was really the only race in which the book- i makers had a chance, and for many of them Karuma was a loser. Also he was a bad horse in doubles. Backers were in excellent form, and in the majority of the events the bookmakers were not able to do much business on outsiders. Had Comanche taken the Sires’ Produce from Honour, the result would have been good for the Ring. Comanche was at a comparatively short price, but not much business was done about his chance. All the public wanted to back was Honour or Pentheus. Even in Strephon’s race the one-two betting was against the books. A bad or indifferent start in a minor race is sufficient to sorely try the temper of backers, not to mention the owners and trainers of those horses ! that are the principal sufferers. It was unfortunate that Royal Doulton and j Queen Arch had their chances ruined j at the start of the Foley Memorial ( Handicap, for neither horse was in \ line when the barrier was released. ! Whatever chance they might have had j —and they both shaped promisingly— i was ruined at the outset, and their j supporters were always urging on for- ; lorn hopes.
