Honour Led All the Way to Score
A.J.C. PRODUCE STAKES
The latest Mason in the field lias made an auspicious beginning in Syclney one win at one effort, and the race in question was the £5,000 Sires’ Produce Stakes, says the Sydney “Guardian." „ Percy, son of the R. J. Mason, travelled from New Zealand with Honour and Agrion, which horses ho trains in conjunction with his father for Mr. G. D. Greenwod. of Gloaming fame, and Honour served as proof that Percy has inherited much of his parent's ability. Honour, too. proved that he is the champion his New Zealand deeds indicated. and the fact that the two big Randwick events for youngsters this season have been won by New Zealanders —Gold Tinge won the Breeders’ Plate in the spring—apparently shows that the New Zealand two-year-olds are a better collection than ours. Led All the Way
The latest triumphant visitor is a big colt who looks capable of carrying huge weights, yet for all his size he jumped out in front and led all the That he did not cover an inch of unnecessary ground—he even drew the rails —while Comanche, who ran him to a short head, went very wide turning for home, showed that he was perhaps a trifle lucky to win. but he struggled on gamely when Comanche seemed to have him beaten and. were the pair to meet under similar terms again, the public would again stick to Honour. It was his first Australian run, and the experience should greatly improve him. _ . , , Pentheus’s inability to finish closer than ninth takes a great deal of explaining. for in his work he has shown himself quite as good a galloper as Honour. Yet he shaped like a very ordinary performer. He showed neither the pace nor the stamina of his recent efforts. The form was wrong. Taking a line through Rosehill form, where Pentheus won with ease, and Comanche, in a.nother division, carrying less weight, was second. Pentheus should certainly have finished ahead of the other youngster. Yet at the finish there was at least six lengths in Comanche’s favour. This race proved conclusively that Melbourne two-year-old results in the autumn were a true reflex of ability. There was an idea abroad that Parkwood w ould show improved form. But Xedda, his Sires’ Produce victor. again beat him home after giving him a long start in the straight. There is not a great deal of Xedda. but he is a beautifully proportioned filly, who might make a fairly decent stayer later on.
