ROOM FOR 20 LINERS

SOUTHAMPTON DOCK EXTENSIONS £13,000,000 SCHEME STARTED British Official 'Wireless RUGBY, Saturday. The rapid increase in the tonnage at the port o£ Southampton is causing the Southern Railway Company to consider methods of accelerating the completion of its £13,000,000 dock extension scheme. Work has been proceeding under pressure for some time on the first portion of the scheme. This will provide 4,000 feet additional berth accommodation. In its entirety the scheme will give nearly 7,000 feet additional berthing space, and 20 of the world’s largest liners will be able to berth at the same time. An area of 170 acres o£ mud land is being reclaimed. This iuvolves the removal of 10,000,000 tons of soil. The plant employed includes the largest dredger in the world.
