GIRL STRUCK BY POLE

VERANDAH KNOCKED DOWN . CARS COLLIDE AT EPSOM A girl, Joan Hagues, aged 11, of Pah Road, Epsom, was injured when e. verandah post, brought down by a car at the corner of Alba and Manukau Roads, struck her, shortly before noon yesterday. A large, heavy car, driven by Mr. R. 11. Wilton, of Pukemiro. had come from Green Lane Road on to Manukau Road when it collided with a car driven by Mr S. Lewis, of Albert Street, which was proceeding along Manukau Road toward the city. Mr. Wilton’s car glanced off and, crossing the footpath, crashed into the door of a grocer’s shop at the corner of Manukau and Alba Roads.

The girl had her right leg fractured above the ankle, and her father, Mr. C. E. Hagues, was struck on the back of the neck by a pole. The girl was taken to the Auckland Hospital, where her condition this morning was reported to be satisfactory. The father’s injury was not serious.

None of the occupants of the two cars was injured. Mr Wilton’s car suffered most damage, its engine being thrown out of place. One of the doors and part of a back wheel of the other car was smashed, but it was able to proceed under its own power.
