LYRIC AND GRAND
“ROMANCE OF THE UNDERWORLD” ! ‘‘Romance of the Underworld," I directed by Irving Cummings, the man who produced "Dressed to Kill,” is the chief attraction at both Lyric and Grand Theatres. Based on the stage play of a decade ago, "Romance of the Underworld” has been brought up to the minute and has been directed with the same naturalness, that even tempo and the humanness that characterised Cummings’s prior offering. Again Mary Astor is the heroine, but this time she is a girl who is forced to eke out a livelihood as an entertainer in a speak-easy. She sickens of it all, decides to regenerate herself and becomes, after hardships, a secretary, but she is handicapped by a former acquaintance, played by Ben Bard, a good-for-nothing. Eventually she marries her employer, becomes a mother and is saved fro m“Derby Dan.” the blackmailer, by a friendly detective in a most surprising manner. "Riley the Cop,” which is the second feature, is a merry burlesque on the police force, starring Louise Fazenda and J. Farrell McDonald.
