Strephon’s Fifth Consecutive Win

The Australian Jockey Club was favoured with ideal weather, and there was u large attendance for the concluding day Of the autumn carnival. As a result of recent rains the race track was heavy. There were large fields and unpopular fancies were the order of the day. The champion Victorian colt Strephon went through the meeting undefeated, enjoying an easy victory against the field in the A.J.C. Plate. The following are the details of the racing:— ROUS HANDICAP A sweepstakes ot <£lo each, with Cl,ooo added; 7 furlongs RACKSA (J. M. Campbell), br m, 4 yrs, by Great Star—Dame Quietly, 7.13 1 FUJI SAN (A. J. Matthew), b g, aged, 11.3 2 GILT EDGE (A. T. Craig), ch g, 3yrs, 10.2 3 Twenty-six started. Violian was the pacemaker early in the race from Casque D'Or and Venetian Lady. The latter was still in command at the distance, just clear of Racksa and Gilt Edge, with Fuji San coming fast' on the outside. In a close finish Racksa won by half-a-neck. Time, 1.28. DANGAR HANDICAP A sweepstakes of £5 each, with £I,OOO added; for three-year-olds; 1} miles. HONAN (E. Steele), ch h, aged, by Chaucer—The Tylt, 7.7 1 COLOURED (J. W. Cook), ch g, 4yrs, 6.9 f LOQUACIOUS (R. Miller), b f, 3yrs, 8.4 t tDead-heat for second. Eighteen started. Soulton was the pacemaker at the start from Catkin and Coloured. At the mile post My Lady Gay was in charge, with Honan, Catkin and Coloured following. Then Honan took command from Love Bojj. Catkin and Soulton. Honan, maintaining his advantage, won comfortably by half-a-length. Time, 2.34}. SECOND STEEPLECHASE A sweepstakes of £2 each, with £750 added; about 3 miles SAMPHIRE (G. W. Goodrich), blk g, 6yrs, by Seremond—Drift, 9.0 .. 1 ADIT (H. and M. Morris), b g. 6yrs, 10.2 2 PRINCE ARIM (J. Phoenix), b g, aged, 10.6 3 Eight started, including Tuki. Myan and Tuki were together for the first round from Prince Arim and Adit. At the foot of the hill in the second round Myan fell, leaving Tuki in charge. Adit joined Tuki at the top of the hill and led at the final jump from Samphire, Tuki and Prince Arim. In the run home Samphire outpaced Adit, and gained the verdict by a length and a-half. Time. 6.23iL FERNHILL HANDICAP A sweepstakes of £6 each, with £I.OOO added; for two-year-olds; 7 furlongs. FIRBOLO (H. White), b c, by Tippler—The Dhow, 8.0 1 MY TALISMAN (R. Saywell), b g, PEACEMAKER (Keogh and Rowe), br c, 5.4 3 Sixteen started. Malvina was the first to show out from My Talisman ami Malyan. Turning for home Malvina showed the way for Siivannagh and My Talisman. The latter took charge at the distance, but Firbolo came with a late run and gained the verdict by three-quarters of a length. Time, 1.28. THE A.J.C. PLATE A sweepstakes of £lO each, with £2,000 added; weigh t-for-age; 2J miles. STREPHON (S. Green), ch c, Syrs, by Saltash—Soldier’s Love. 8.2 . . 1 BLACK DUCHESS (Mrs. P. G. Macnamara), blk m, 4yrs, 8.12 . . . . 2 DEADLIGHT (E. K. ‘White), br g. 4yrs. S.ll 2 Also: Valamita, 9.4; Mondiaga, S.ll. Black Duchess showed the way from Strephon, Leadlight, Mondiaga and Valamita. Strephon then joined Black Duchess and at seven furlongs the pair were 20 lengths clear of Leadlight, Mondiaga and Valamita. The last-named broke down at the half-mile. Strephon cleared away from Black Duchess turning for home, and he eventually won with ease by 15 lengths. Time. 3.56. FINAL HANDICAP A sweepstakes of £S each, with £I,OOO added; 1J miles WEDDING EVE (R. G. Allen), b m, 6yrs, by Linacre—Wedding Day, 8.5 l DON MOON (W. Booth), br g, 6vrs, S.ll 2 SUN FLARE (Charles James), br h, oyrs. 7.4 3 Fifteen started. Gesto was first away from Valley, Don Moon and Lipari. Turning for home The Grindstone had charge from Lipari, New Sweet and Sunflare. Wedding Eve ran to the front at the distance, and in a close finish gained the verdict by half-a-neck. Time, 2.6.
