STANDARD HALF-HOLIDAY

PRIVATE BILL POSSIBLE MR. F. LYE OFFERS SUPPORT (Prom Our Own Correspondent) MORRINSVILLE, To-day. The half-holiday question was again discussed at the monthly meeting of the Morrinsville Chamber of Commerce last evening. - Mr. F. Bye, M.P., who was present, said there would never be unanimity on the issue until a day was fixed by Parliament. Personally he would favour Saturdayclosing if it was universal, but it was at present unfair that one town should close on Saturday afternoons and an adjacent one take its trade by remaining open. This was the position between Cambridge and Te A wamutu, and Morrinsville and Te Aroha. He was convinced that a mother with school children would not waste a mid-week day if there was a town within reasonable distance open on Saturday, while the lit-up shops carried their own appeal. There was nothing surer than that where adjacent towns were open on different days the bulk of the farmers’ trade went to the town open on Saturday. In answer to a question, Mr. Lye said he would be quite prepared to raise the question in Parliament and to “father” a Bill. The chamber decided to write to the Associated Chambers asking it to authorise all members to enlist their support toward getting Parliament to taka action.
