SIR HARRY LAUDER
GREAT WORLD ENTERTAINER “For the Empire” is Sir Harry Lauder’s great slogan, , and there is no better ambassador for British trade than the great comedian. He is also a great advocate of British films for British people. It was while starring in the production of a British “special film” that he met with the accident which was directly the reason of his present visit to the Dominion. Fractured ribs and slight internal injury resulted in his being ordered a long sea voyage, and so, accompanied by his niece, Miss Greta Lauder, he left for New Zealand, where he knew he would be with many good friends, able to indulge in his favourite pastime and hobby, fishing. E. J. Carroll, the distinguished entrepreneur, then and still in London, journeyed to Southampton to say au revoir to Sir Harry, but there was neither thought or mention of a tour following the holiday. On the voyage out Sir Harry was completely cured, and when he stepped ashore in Wellington he was fit and well, and the picture of good health. He had no set plans; all he wanted was peace and quiet and a fly or deep sea rod in his hand, but his friends and admirers had quite different ideas and insistent requests and demands for a few professional appearances were heaped on him from all parts of the country—telegrams, letters, deputations followed him to the Bay of Islands, Rotorua, Taupo, Southland and even Lake Te Anau, and for peace sake he agreed to do a brief tour at the end of his holiday, if it could be arranged by E. J. Carroll. Cables were exchanged, and thus it is that Sir Harry, with an entirely new company, will commence a season of nine nights at His Majesty's Theatre on Wednesday, April 17. The box plans for the season open at Lewis Eady, Ltd., on Monday, April 15, and applications for reservations from country patrons may be now sent to the box office.
