TARANAKI TROTS

THE FINAL WORK-OUTS COURSE IN GOOD ORDER (Special to THE SUN) NEW PLYMOUTH, To-day. The Racing Club this morning opened the outside of the course proper for trotting work, many trainers seizing the opportunity of a final test. The circuit was in good order, but a gale blowing down the straight militated against fast times. The majority of work was done over a mile, Carmel taking the honours with an impressive effort. Our Nancy went a particularly fast six furlongs, stopping over the final quarter of a mile. The watches were produced when Benefice and Trustworthy stepped from the 12 furlongs post, but the former was not doing it right over the first half, allowing Trustworthy to get a good break. Benefice did better over the last six, but the touts were disappointed. The mare is still showing the effects of a rough trip down, but may do better to-morrow in a weak field. Warspite conceded All Red 48yds and was level with the Hastings pacer at the end of a mile bout. A Good Work-out Bell Dial pleased greatly by holding Gold Dial at the end of a mile run in smart time. Ngahuia slipped over half a mile quickly, and Karina showed nice dash for a mile. All eyes were on Schoolmate, but after travelling live furlongs at a solid clip Bussell eased him up. Schoolmate has come late into favour for the Cup. Wild Douns trotted several circuits steadily, but Dealer did not show to advantage. Joy Bird and Daytime stopped badly at the end of two miles, while Dawdler impressed at half the distance. Black Ballin did the most pleasing work of the novice class, but may not reproduce it in the race. Peter McKinney disappointed over two miles, and Carwood was not in a good humour. Our Patch showed a lot of speed for six furlongs, where he was eased. Reta Thorpe got to' the end of a mile and a-half in fairly good time. The majority of the horses are arriving from Hawera this afternoon.
