LABOUR’S EXECUTIVES
ELECTION OF OFFICERS MR. J. THORN NEW PRESIDENT Press Association WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Except for the election of officers, practically the whole of the time of the conference of the New Zealand Labour Party at the Trades Mall was taken up with the discussion of internal organisation and finance. The day's programme was concluded well within time in the afternoon, and in the evening a social was tendered to the delegates by the Wellington Labour Representation Committee. The election of officers resulted: President, Mr. J. Thorn (Wellington), unopposed; vice-president, the Rev. J. K. Archer ; secretary and treasurer, Mr. W. Nash, for the eighth year in succession; members of the National Executive, resident members, Messrs. T. Bundle, W. Bromley, L. McIlroy, W. Atkinson and Mrs. Semple; divisional area members, Messrs. J. G. Barclay (North Auckland), M. J. Savage, M.P. (Auckland City), W. E. Barnard, M.P. (Hawke’s May and Poverty Bay), J. S. Montgomerie (Auckland provincial), W. J. Rogers, Mayor of Wanganui (Taranaki and King Country), J. Whittle (Manawatu and Pahiatua), W. Taylor (Hutt, Otaki and Wairarapa), T. Parfitt (West Coast), F. R. Cooke (Canterbury), F. Jones (Otago). The South Canterbury and Southland representatives have yet to be elected. Mr. Thorn, the newly-elected president, was bora at Christchurch. In 1905 he was selected as Labour candidate for Christchurch South. He spent several years in Great Britain, where he was engaged in Labour Party activities and journalism. On his return to New Zealand in 1913 he immediately commenced working for the Trade Union movement, and in 1914 unsuccessfully contested the Palmerston North seat. He has for a long period been secretary of the Labour Representation Committee and has been editor of the “New Zealand Worker” for the past seven or eight years.
