SYDNEY TO PERTH
AUSTRALIA TO HOLD FIRST AIR-RACE 2.355 MILES IN SIX DAYS The six-days’ cross-country air race from Sydney to Perth, 2,355 miles, in October, as part of the West Australian centenary celebrations, -will be flown in 12 stages. No stage will exceed 250 miles. It is hoped this race will stimulate cross-country flying by private pilots and owners. The contest is open to competitors of all nations, and the machines will be handicapped according to weight and horse-power, so even pilots with small machines will have an equal chance of winning the prizes offered, which amount to £2,000. The short stages will minimise the risk of accident, and should enable small planes to keep to the schedule. THE SCHEDULE The schedule is:— First Day—Morning, leave Sydney for Junee (240 miles); afternoon, leave Junee for Melbourne (250 miles). Second Day—Morning, leave Melbourne for NhiU (226 miles); afternoon, leave Nbill for Adelaide (200 miles). Third Day—Morning. leave Adelaide for Kimba (180 miles); afternoon, leave Kimba for Ceduna (170 miles). Fourth Day—Morning, leave Ceduna for Cook (230 miles); afternoon, leave Cook for Forrest (140 miles). Fifth • Day—Morning, leave Forrest for Rawlinna (170 mileB); afternoon, leave Rawlinna for Kalgoorlie (225 miles). Sixth Day—Morning, leave Kalgoorlie for Tammin (205 miles); afternoon, leave Tammin for Perth (120 miles). The Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and West Australian Aero Clubs and West Australian Airways, Ltd., will control the various stages of the race. Races of this kind have long been popular in other parts of the V $ Id, and, though many Australian pilots lack experience of cross-country flying, I many entries are expected.
