SHAVED HEADS
BYRD’S MEN MAKE MERRY REMEDY FOR BALDNESS (United Service) NEW YORK, Sunday. BY RUSS JELL, OWEN Copyrighted, 1928, by the “New York Times” company and the St. Louis “PostDispatch.” All rights for publication reserved throughout the world. Wireless to the “New York Times.” QAY OF WHALES, Sunday. To-day being Easter Sunday we did no work. The camp is getting in such good shape that one day off a week will be possible, whether or not there are blizzards which make work out of doors impossible. Everyone is reading or attending to his personal effects. The temperature is 28 degrees below zero, so that strolls on the Barrier are not part of our Sunday programme. There is no Easter parade here, and if there were it is not likely that the fashions would prove popular at home. There is one fashion which certainly would be frowned upon. Many of us have cut off our hair and shaved our heads. The idea is to see if it will prevent those bald spots which are threatening our appearance, although some of us have done it just for fun. The result is amusing, for some have luxurious whiskers of all colours and designs and the contrast with the shaven polls makes an ensemble which one’s nearest relatives would not recognise. ft is warm enough while we stay round the base, but the fashion would not be recommended if there were any flying or trail work. At night one sees a group of youthful but bald men each holding a book in one hand and meditatively rubbing his crown with the other like a venerable member of a sedate club. At least it feels good. Moreover, there is no one down here to care what we look like.
