TO RECORD QUAKES
TWO NEW OBSERVATORIES SEISMOGRAPHS ORDERED (From Our Oun Correspondent) WELLINGTON, Monday. New seismographs for Dominion magnetic observatories, and the creation of two new observing stations, are announced by Dr. E. Marsden, secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. It is now over a year since the department ordered from an American firm a special new seismograph for -Mew Zealand needs. The firm replied that it was constructing a newer model, and promises to forward it at an early date. Recently the department again wrote to the United States seeking information as to why the instrument had not come to hanj. The new seismograph will be tested out by the Government astronomer at Wellington. If it proves satisfactory, three more will be ordered, one for the « ‘hristehureh magnetic observatory, the others for installation, at Wanganui and Nelson. Then. states Dr. Marsden, it will be possible to work out by triangulation data which at present is unavailable.
