INDUSTRIAL STANDARDS
AID TO MANUFACTURERS DOMINION-WIDE SCHEME f (From Our Resident Reporter) WELLINGTON, To-day. Important proposals for bask; standards for New Zealand manufacturing industries have now been formulated by the Standardisation Committee of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. The scheme, which has been, over a year in preparation, also includes proposals for co-operation betweeca manufacturers to provide Domin3k>n-wide facilities for testing manufactured products and raw materials. Tins week a conference will be held with the Department of Industries and Commerce and the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Association. Concurrently, an investigating committee in Australia is urging the Commonwealth Government to -adopt a scheme for a similar end. The question of standardise tion was one which wag closely investigated by Dr. E. Marsdgsn, secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, during his absences in Australia and the United States. The United States, of course, n maintains a bureau of standards, where there is tested everything which the Government is likely to purchase, bust the information is not available for public use. The New Zealand proposals are less ambitious, but provide for scientific co-operation with industries to aid them in the choice of materials and methods of working. The department claims that such a step will reduce production costs, aid marketing, and stabilise demand.
