TO RECORD DEPTH
ITALIAN SUBMARINE’S DIVE (Australian and N.Z■ Press Association) ROME, Saturday. A message from Spezia says the Italian Submarine, Mameli, successfully passed a pressure test, beating the world’s depth record by reaching 117 metres (about 380 feet), which is 12 metres more than the previous record attained last year by a submarine of the Balilla type. _The Mameli, which is 212 feet long, was built at Taranto shipyards The submarines of the Caiilla class are designed for deep diving, and are of exceptionally strong construction. They weer first laid down in 1925. The surface displacement is 1.300 tons, and submerged, 1,600 tons. Their over-all length is 282 feet, speed on surface, 18£ knots They are armed with six 21-inch torpedo tubes.
