Midnight Smash at Christchurch CAR CRASHES INTO POLE (Special to THE Si X) CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. A YOUNG WOMAN \v;:s killed and ihree other occupants of a motor-car were injured in, a smash which occurred early on Sunday morning:.

casualties were: KILLED: Maureen Doris Mitchell, aged 25, of Bristol Street, St. Alban's, at the Clock Tower Corner. The car struck a telegraph pole, inbmp wgl'p ykwp ykwp ykwp y INJURED Cecil Penlington, of Wek Road, Fendalton, fractured arm. Nora Rich, of Papanui, bruises and shaking. John Boyd Clark, of Papanui, the driver of the car, bruises and shaking. The party had been to the Dixieland Cabaret, and the car, a threeseater, was being driven down High

I Street toward the Clock Tower. Rain was falling at the time, the roads were greasy, and visibility was bad. | It is stated by eye-witnesses that i the driver, on passing the Clock • Tower, endeavoured to turn south into | Manchester Street. The car swerved, j and appeared likely to strike a rock kerbing. but the driver recovered conj trol and swerved back to the road. In 1 doing this the telegraph pole was struck. The car struck the pole with the left front hub. the running board and whole left side being torn away. Miss Mitchell, sitting on the left, received the whole force of the smash, and she died on the way to hospital. Penlington was also admitted to hospital, but liis condition is not serious. The inquest has been opened and ad-' ] journed.
