CROWDS THRONG CHURCHES HUNDREDS RECEIVE COMMUNION The spirit of Easter, queen of festivals, was entered into yesterday by thousands of Aucklanders. Anglican and Roman Catholic churches report that the early celebrations of the Communion and the Mass were very largely attended from G a.m., when the first services began, until the conclusion of the festival in the evening. The glorious morning found the people astir in larger numbers than ev- r, and hundreds attended the 8 a.m. celebration, which was generally found the most convenient. The services in 2*resby terian, Methodist and other churches were all appropriate to Easter, with special addresses and hymns. At 7 a.m. a large gathering of members of the Christian Endeavour Society met on the summit of Mount Eden for prayer and the singing of hymns. An address was given by the Rev. H. Knowles Kempton. Archbishop Averill was celebrant and preacher at the 11 o’clock service in St. Matthew’s Church, which was attended by members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade. The evening service, at which Canon Grant Cowen preached. was broadcast by station IYA. In the evening the Archbishop preached to a large congregation in St. Marys Cathedral upon the evidences of the Resurrection.
