ROWDY RACEGOER
CAUSED DELAY TO TRAIN REVELLERS’ REWARDS When holiday spirit holds sway, erring and abashed celebrants stand sheepishly in Court the following morning. Norman Lawrence Herk -was one of those in the Police Court this morning who found Easter-tide somewhat overwhelming. Herk is a labourer, 29 years of age. At Ellerslie railway siding on Saturday—Herk had been to the races—he was so intoxicated that his actions resulted in three charges being made against him. Herk admitted this morning being disorderly while drunk and obstructing a traffic inspector on duty.
For drunkenness he was fined £l, and on the second charge he was convicted and discharged. A third charge of attempting to evade payment of a railway fare of Is between Ellerslie and the city was denied by Herk, but he was convicted and ordered to pay expenses.
“Herk was at the races and had more drink than was good for him.” Sub-Inspector McCarthy said. “There was absolutely no controlling him. Tile Railway Department alleges that Herk caused trouble by buying three tickets when there were four passengers. A delay to the start of the train resulted from the disturbance.” An inspector for the Railway Department thought that accused did not know just what he was doing. It was explained that it was the accused’s first appearance in Court. “PUT THE BOOT IN”
Another man who created a disturbance on Saturday was Robert Mullins, a labourer or seaman, 24 years of age. According to Mr. McCarthy, Mullins “put the boot in” to a man he assaulted outside a theatre in Queen Street.
When he was drunk, Mullins resisted efforts to take him away from the theatre. He knocked William Robert Cooper down and kicked him in the side.
Mullins’s behaviour cost him £2 for the assault and 10s for being drunk. Iu spite of two or three warnings from a constable, William Thomas Russell, aged 27, a labourer, persisted in being rowdy outside an hotel in ICarangahape Road on Saturday. Mr. w. R. McKean, S.M., fined him £l.
