SPECTATORS AS REFEREES!

A remarkable scene occurred at a billiards match between W. Smith and T. Newman, in Glasgow a few weeks ago. Newman had made a break of 375 when he played a soft cannon and the referee was in doubt about whether the player had scored or not. He asked three of the spectators in line with the ball and two of them gave their decision as a miss. Newman, however, did not agree with this, and maintained that he had scored. Just at that moment Smith jumped up and shouted: “Adhere to the rules!” The referee finally gave the decision against Newman, much to the disapproval of the spectators, and both Newman and Smith continued to argue, but ultimately the scene ended.
