In the Market Place

GLUT OF POTATOES

FRUIT SALES IMPROVE The City Markets were well stocked for the Easter auctions to-day. Southern potatoes are still realising good prices, although there has been a decline in value. Local potatoes are cheap. A general improvement in value and demand is noticeable in the fruit market. Cox's Orange, the highest priced apples, have risen in value. Jonathan apples are dearer, too. The best Louis Bon pears are meeting with a keen inquiry. A slight rise has taken place for Te Kauwhata grapes. Little change is apparent in hothouse grape sales. Peaches are meeting with a fair inquiry. Golden Queen peaches are selling well. First-grade bananas are dear. All lines of vegetables were heavily supplied to-day. Poultry has been in exceptionally heavy supply during the past week, most lines being over-supplied on comparatively dull markets. Choice heavy cockerels have maintained their values, but there have been declines in all other prominent lines. Turkeys have come forward in numbers well above the average, but the quality has generally been poor for this time of the year.
