BLAZE IN PLANTATION

FOREST AT WAIKUMETE 40,000 TREES DAMAGED For several hours yesterday fire swept over portion of the City Council plantation joining the Waikumete Cemetery. In all some 40,000 young pinus insignis trees were destroyed or badly damaged, these comprising half the number in the plantation. The area swept by the fire was about 100 acres. The plantation had a heavy undergrowth of scrub, which the young trees would have blotted out in a short time.

Some 20 men were engaged in fighting the fire, which died out when it reached the road.
