OPPOSITION FOR PRESENT HOLDER MR. R. E. N. MATTHEWS STANDING At the forthcoming municipal elections the Mayor of Mount Albert, Mr. L. E. Rhodes, will have an opponent. Mr. R. E. N. Matthews, a barrister, announces His intention to contest the Mayoralty and claims to have the support of the Mount Albert Ratepayers’ Association. Mr. Matthews has seen previous service as a councillor of the borough. He was elected in 1924 and held office until 1927, when ho retired voluntarily. He was born in New South Wales, but came to Auckland as a boy and has lived in this city ever since, and has been a resident of Mount Albert for 15 years. Mr. Matthews has been approached by many ratepayers and has been approached by deputation. He will commence his campaign by endeavouring to have enrolled the 7,000 electors of Mount Albert who, he has discovered, are not on the rolls. The poll takes place on May J.
