DRAMA OF JEALOUSY
“OTHELLO,” THE MOOR MR. WILKIE S FINE ACTING ••Othello,” by William Shakespeare. Presented at His Majesty’s Theatre last evening by Allan Wilkie. Cast: — Othello Allan Wilkie lago Alexander Marsh Roderigo Arthur Keane Oassio Dennis Barry The Duke ...... -Herbert Sheldriek Brantantio William Lockhart Emilia Lorna Forbes Desdemona ...... Miss Hunter Watts : “Othello,” that amazing drama of jealousy and love, was played with admirable success by Mr. Wilkie and his company last evening. Of all Shakespeare's tragedies, it calls for more emotional storms than any other. Although the members of the company portrayed that emotion to its fullest extent, human feeling was never overwrought, and least of all m e 1 o cLra m a t i c. Mr. Wilkie’s Moor was a frenzied, fi*ry person, tortured by the pangs of agony and jealousy. It is perhaps his most tempestuous piece of acting. He is swept by such gusts of feeling that one could feel liis despair and passion. Miss Hunter “Watts gave us a womanly Desdemona. The effect of her gentleness was increased by comparison with Othello’s outbursts. Mr. Marsh gave one of his firmest performances of the season, particularly in the scenes where he taunts and tempts the jealous Moor. Mr. Barry’s Cassio was another well-defined portrait, and Miss Forbes delighted everyone by her study of Emilia. The other members of the company were admirable in the supporting roles. This evening Mr. Wilkie will present “The Tempest,” and to-morrow, both at the matinee and the final performance of the season in the evening, he will give us “Much Ado About Nothing.”
