TO IMPROVE WOOL
PROGRESS OF RESEARCH
WORK AT MASSEY COLLEGE Press Association PALMERSTON N., Wednesday. Brief mention of several important investigations that are being made by the staff of the Massey Agricultural College was made at to-day's meeting of the College Council. The principal, Professor Peren, reported on the progress being made in wool research. He said Dr. Dry, zoologist, Mr. Scrivener, soil chemist, and himself had visited 35 stud Romney flocks in the North Island, and had secured a large amount of data and material, and also 200 ewes, which would be used for special mating in connection with wool research.
With respect to flax, Dr. Yeates had spent the summer scouring the flax swamps of both islands for promising strains, and had brought back with him an immense amount of useful material and plants, which had been placed in the flax experimental area for further investigation.
The principal also reported that the Dairy Research Institute had accomplished a great deal in its investigation of openness in cheese. Most of this work had been done in the college dairy factory, but samples had also been obtained from other affected and non-affected dairy factories. Investigations into dairy variations in the production of fat and milk by cows were being continued, the college herd forming the basis of the experiment.
