FLOOD’S DEADLY SWEEP

ALABAMA STRICKEN

OUTBREAK OF DISEASE

(United P.A.—By Telegraph Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) NEW YORK, Monday.

A message from Birmingham. Alabama, says it is officially estimated that there have been 100 deaths in that State alone through the floods. The members of the National Guard and Public Health services are battling against disease. Martial law continues to prevent any spread of attempted looting. The refugees in some centres will be allowed to return to their wrecked homes to-morrow. Cases of measles, pneumonia and typhoid fever are reported. The polluted drinking water is greatly menacing the refugees. In Alabama the flood waters are receding, but the position is still acute in Georgia and Florida. The damage to property is now estimated at about £4,000,000.
