HELPING LOCAL INDUSTRY
RAILWAY MINISTER’S VIEWS REPLY OF FARMERS’ UNION That he held the same views on the question of granting concessions in freight to New Zealand-made goods was expressed in a communication received by the Auckland executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union last evening from the Minister of Railways, the Hon. W. B. Taverner. The Minister’s letter pointed out that the principle of giving reduced rates for locally-grown or manufactured articles was certainly recognised in railway rating. He was satisfied that it would do untold harm to manufacturers, and likewise the farmers of the Dominion, should the Railway Department depart from its present practice of charging a higher, or what may be termed the correct classified rate, for the imported article and granting a lower rate for the New Zealand product It was decided to reply to the Minister, elaborating the point that the higher charge on imported linseed meal would mean a loss in business to the railways.
