SCHOOLS OF FORESTRY
AMALGAMATION PROPOSAL CONFERENCE MAY BE CALLED The council of the Auckland University College at its meeting yesterday received a letter from the registrar of the University of New Zealand recommending that the councils of the Auckland and Canterbury University Colleges should confer with a view to coming to some arrangement by which there should be only one school of forestry in New Zealand. The suggestion was discussed in committee, after which the chairman. Sir George Fowlds reported that it had, been decided that the letter, accompanied by the report on the Dominion School of Forestry prepared by Professor H. H. Corbin, should be forwarded to the Commissioner of State Forests, asking him to call a conference on the question and asking him to attend.
A letter was also received from the Auckland Society of Arts stating that a gener il meeting of members had been called to consider a proposal that an annual grant of £4OO should be made to the college on the understanding that it should establish a chair of Fine Arts. The college council discussed the question in committee, after which it was reported that it had been decided to refer the letter to a committee consisting of the chairman and Mr. F. H. Northcroft and Mr. Charles Rhodes. The professor of philosophy reported that Mr. R. P. Anschutz, who is coming to Auckland to take up a position as lecturer in philosophy, had been awarded the degree of Ph.D. by the University of Edinburgh. It was decided to congratulate Air. Anschutz on the high honour attained by him. The award of a number of scholarships was reported, as follows: — Lissie Rathbone Scholarship. J. A. W. Bennett; Sanders Memorial Scholarship, Florence Mary Pressley: proximo ; accessit, P. F. Shirley; John Court Scholarship. Norman Lamont; J. A. C. A llum prize. F. B. Stephens; School of Music Scholarship, \ era L. Cogswell; Chamber of Commerce Scholarships, D. L. Robinson and | Mavis Stokes. The college diploma in architecture was awarded to L. B. Harris and J. F. Stedman.
