CONTESTS AT CHRISTCHURCH SELECTING AUCKLAND’S TEAM Fifty graduates and students of the Auckland University College will take part in the annual inter-college tournament, to be held at Christchurch during Faster week. The team is one of the largest ever sent from Auckland for this contest. It will leave on March 27 and will be absent for about nine days. Messrs. A. K. Turner and R. 13. Hardy will accompany the team as delegates.

The inter-faculty sports are to be staged on the Domain to-morrow afternoon, when the representatives in the athletic events will be finally selected. In the tennis competition Auckland will bo well represented by A. C Stedman. the present singles and combined doubles champion, and Misses P. and L. Miller, former holders of the women’s singles championship. Auckland has held the basketball championship for some years now and by the high standard of play shown by the present team it has good chances of retaining the honours again at this tournament. The team, which includes three members of the tennis team, Misses J. B. Mueller (captain), M. Adams and P. Miller, was picked as a result of a final trial match played yesterday afternoon. Shooting for the Haslam Shield, which cotints in the tournament, will be held at Penrose on Saturday. The team representing each college shoots in its own centre, and the shooting must be completed before March 2c. The Auckland team has not yet been chosen. The trial debate resulted in the selection of Messrs. F. A. Forsman and A. Miller, who will take the negative on the subject: “That State Interference in New Zealand in Industry and Commerce should be Discouraged.” Professors Algie and Anderson and Mr. L. p. Leary, the three judges, considered the standard of debating ability shown in the trial was particularly high. The teams already selected are as follows: Tennis. —Men’s singles, A. C. Stedman. G. C.
