Nightmarch Fails Over the Distance

rapier gains gold cup final day at trentham (Special to THE SUN). WELLINGTON, Monday. This morning at Trentham was threatening, and light rain fell for a few hours, but the course was not seriously affected. Speculation was brisk, sufficient to wipe out the first day’s deficit. The total for the meeting was £102,803 10s, against £100,650 10s —an increase of £2,153 on the last autumn fixture. High-weight Handicap Gala Hay dominated the betting on the High-weight Handicap. Swoopaiong, Clarendon, and Inferno were the early leaders from Monetize, Vivo, and Break o’ Hay. with Gala Hay and Glen a Bay in the rear. Vivo soon began to move toward the front, and she led into the straight from Inferno and Monetize. The leader was never headed, and ran homo a winner by half a length from Break o’ Hay, with Imarosebud a length and a-half back third. Glena Bay was fourth, followed by Clarendon and Gala Hay. Gala Day got a bad run all the way, while Break o’ Hay was a shade unlucky. Hutt Handicap A short price was touched by Toxeuma in the Hutt Handicap, but his backers had no anxiety. Borsalene and Toxeuma were almost on terms for half a mile, just ahead of Ruanui. Then Toxeuma slipped away, and haa four lengths’ lead on Ruanui and Borsalene when he turned for home. Going right away, he increased this to ten lengths at the winning post. Kilbrensyth ran up into second place a length in front of Ruanui, and Tidal, under punishment, linislied fourth. Borsalene, Lady Killer, Twink, and Black Mint were next in that order. Toxeuma made an exhibition of the opposition, and had Ruanui in trouble a long way from home.

Trentham Gold Cup Of the live who contested the Trentham Gold Cup, .Nightmarch was a good favourite. Joy King went out and made the running, leading through the straight from Nightmarch, Rapine, Rapier, and Count Cavour. Five furlongs from home, Joy King ran out from the rails, and Nightmarch slipped through leading into the straight from Rapier, who hit the front a furlong from home, to win by a neck from Count Cavour, who finished in fine style. Nightmarch was two lengths away in third place, Rapine a moderate fourth, and J<v>' King a hopeless last. Nightmarch’e chance looked good till he passed the distance, and then the older horses fairly outstayed him. Rapine was well beaten, and Count Cavour liked the easy track. Muritai Handicap Zippor and Stanchion were almost equal favourites in the Muritai Handicap. The start was uneven, and several got away badly, Stanchion included. Zippon, a good beginner, at once showed up. # and he and I-lurly Burly put a break on the field, but were coming back when the straight was reached, where Rabbi, Goodwill, and Stanchion were at the head of the others. Stanchion did not run on, out Goodwill and Rabbi cut down the leaders, the former winning by a length, while Rabbi had only half a head to spare from Zippor,. Rory Mor was a fair fourth, with Full Mark, Btssac, and Roi de Val next. Pacific Handicap Followers of the favourite, Ceremony, in the Pacific Handicap, did not have a great deal of anxiety. Ceremony began brilliantly, and led on to the course proper from a closely bunched field, at the head of which were Courtlike, Equitant,. Hot Springs and First Money, with Polyxena and Tea Queen handy. Ceremony never left the issue in doubt, and won by two lengths from Equitant, who beat Tea Queen by half a length. Polyxena was fourth., and just behind him were First Money, Royal Parade, and Gay Duke. Ceremony won so easily ’that he is sure to be fancied for bis Manawatu engagement this week. Equitant is consistent but unlucky. However, she had no chance with Ceremony.

Autumn Handicap A lot of big money went west when Pegaway was beaten in the Autumn Handicap. White Fang led the field out of the straight, and passing the mile post he was in charge from Amor, Bright Glow, and Pegaway. White Fang and Amor led along the back together, with Pegaway, Pink Note, and Bright Glow handy. Amor led into the straight, and Bright Glow made a brief challenge, but the real danger came from Pink Note, who finished very solidly, and only failed by naif a head to get to Amor. Tresham was going well all down the way in the straight, and was only a couple of lengths behind Pink Note. White Fang was fourth, followed by Star Area, Pegaway, and Bright Glow. Pegaway and Bright Glow failed badly over the last couple of furlongs. Suburban Handicap Money rolled in fast for Silver Paper in the Suburban Handicap, and he went out a firm favourite. He soon hit the front, and led on to the course proper, with Rin Tin Tin, Cimabue, Lysander, and Keddar well up. Rin Tin Tin did not run on after entering the straight, and Silver Paper went on to win very easily by two lengUis from Cimabue, who was only half a head in front of Lysander. Keddar, Freehold, and Moa Bird were next. Belmont Handicap There was a good pool in the Belmont Handicap, but anything was paying a good price. Arikinui was favourite, and he soon hit the front, and led on to the course proper, where Second Thought also was prominent, •Bfed Noteworthy was bandy. Noteworthy finished well, but Arikinui kept him off, to win by half a length. Second Thought, who was third, was three lengths away, and just ahead of Chief Singer, Arrow Boy. Lady Spear, Stanchion, and Glare, in that order. Second High-welght Handicap, of £260; 1 mile.—s Vivo, 10. S (A. E. Ellis), 1; o Break o’ Day, 10.0 (A. Griffith), 2; 2 Imarosebud, 0.12 (r.
