COMRADES’ TRIBUTE
MEMORIAL TO MAJOR PEACOCK To-morrow afternoon a memorial to Major Henry Peacock, who commanded the first contingent of Maoris to leave New Zealand for the Great War. will be unveiled in O’Neill’s Point Cemetery. Bays water. The memorial, which is about 7ft high, is made of Coromandel granite, and bears the inscription “.Greeted by Maori soldiers to their beloved 0.C., and in recognition of the great services he rendered his countr;/“ Captain ‘R, Dansey, ad jut i ol the Maori Pioneer Battalion, organised the fund for the memorial. The amount was raised by public subscriptions, and native officers of the battalion contributed. Major Peacock contracted enteric fever at Perth, on the way to the front and was invalided home. When he recovered he was in charge: of Narrow Neck camp, and after the armistice he joined the permanent forces with headquarters at Paeroa. He died on October 25, 1924. It is expected that Sir Apirana Ngata and Bishop Bennet will be present at the unveiling ceremony. Mans'- Maoris will arrive from Ngaruawahia by special train to-morrow morning and will attend the ceremony, which will take place soon after mid-day*
