DRURY’S ROAD
DEVIATION CONTROVERSY DEPUTATION TO MINISTER In its battle for a straightening of the section of the Great South Road through their area, a band of Drury residents has approached practically every public body interesetd in the problem. This morning its members sought the assistance of the Hon. E. A. Ransom, Minister of Public Works. Mr. YV. J. Jordan, M.P. for Manukau, introduced the deputation, explaining that, though the question was outside his province, he was familiar with the position. Mr. S. D. Collins said the deputation consisted of residents and ratepayers. A straight road through Drury instead of the proposed deviation made a difference of 3S chains and eliminated all dangerous corners. Unfortunately they were up against vested interests which wished the road to go the other way.
Miss A. Cossey submitted a plan drawn by herself and asked why Creek Street, on the line of the proposed straight road, had not been surveyed. She stressed the advantages of the straight road from the point of view of utility, economy and public safety.
Mr. Donald Bremner supported the previous speakers. In replying, the Minister pointed out that the Highways Board had authority to settle these questions without reference to him. He could promise, however, to put the position, as outlined by the deputation, before the board; also to inspect the roads on his way South.
