OHINEMURI CLUB’S FIXTURE
Surprise in Hurdles PAEROA, To-day. THE Ohinemuri Jockey Club’s annual fixture opened at Paeroa to-day in splendid weather and before a verylarge attendance. The track was hard.

The Potoanui-Highflown bracket, £760, was made first choice in the hurdle handicap, with Odin, £625, and Berinthia, £519, next in demand. All YVera, carrying only 777.- tickets, eventually proved the winner, and returned his supporters a price in the vicinity of a third of a century. Highflown was the first to show out, and led past the stand from Terrapeen, Ah YVera, Berinthia, Odin, Kaihoremai, Potoanui, Uralla. At the six furlong post Berinthia lost her rider, and a furlong further on Ah YVera, Highflown and Terrapeen were in line, followed by Potoanui, Odin, Ivomak, and Uralla. Crossing the top, Ah YVera drew clear, and had a lead of six lengths from Highflown at the home turn, with Potoanui, Odin, and Komak doing best of the remainder. The leader was not troubled to win comfortably by three lengths from Potoanui, with Odin two lengths back third. Then came Highflow'n, Komak, Terrapeen, Uralla, Kaihoremai, YVaipu, and Hamblin’ Kid. Norval Tea was the only course withdrawal for the Karangahape Handicap, and most money was found for the top-weight, Awamutu, who carried £717, as against Pellette, £547, and Love Call, £505. YVhen the field had
settled down, Y r alstreet was at the head of affairs, with Awamutu, Pellette, Hose Lupin, and Currajong following. Awamutu soon ran to the front, however, and at the end of three furlongs was leading Valstreet, Pellette, Rose Lupin, and Love Call. Y’alstreet ran up to Awamutu nearing the turn, and this pair led round the bend on terms, Pellette and Rose Lupin following together. YVhen straightened up, Pellette simply played with the field, and won in convincing fashion by four lengths from Awamutu, who was a further three-quarters of a length ahead of Valstreet. Rose Lupin was fourth, and, straggling after her, were Love Call, Currajong, and Flying Prince. NOVICE HANDICAP Of £150; 5i furlongs. 3 THE JACK JUMPER (Mrs. M. E. Time, 1.9 1-5. Winner trained by owner. Horses of all sizes and shapes were seen out for the Novice Handicap, and the public choice was Just Nell, G. Paul’s representative, £sll. Hiata, £469, was a sound second choice, with a drop to The Jackjumper, £270, a good return being the reward of followers of this horse. It was a grand start, and King Fiend was the only one who did not move away. Shortly after the start, Haviland, Land Measure, Lady Mestor, and Loving Cup were bunched in that order, followed by Swift Light, Camp Prince, Leona, and Pae Ana. Haviland had a shade the best of matters turning for home, and his nearest attendants were Land Measure, Thanks, Swift Light (off the course), Just Nell, The Jackjumper, and Camp Prince. The Jackjumper came fast over the last bit, and won well by half a length. Plaviland and Loving Cup had a great set-to over the final 100 yards, and though Haviland appeared to have beaten Loving Cup for second money, the judge ignored both of them, placing Camp Prince second by a neck, and Loving Cup third. Night Comet was fourth, followed by Whakama, Just Nell, Liona, Land Measure, Swift Light, King Leslie, and Camp Prince (officially second). Townsend, Pukekohe. The pen was put through Ohinemuri’s name in the Ohinemuri Gold Cup, and in the small field of seven the favourites were Desert Glow £1,035, The Lover £970, and Royal Doulton £BOB. The field got away to a splendid start, Glen Star leading out from Maori Boy, Flying Juliet, Royal Doulton, The Lover and Desert Glow. Passing the stand Glen Star, Maori Boy and Flying Juliet were together, with Desert Glow and The Lover right up, and a gap of six lengths back to Royal Doulton and Queen Arch Glen Star was still at the head of affairs going down the back, attended by Flying Juliet, Maori Boy, Desert Glow and The Lover, with the other two well back. The field bunched crossing the top, and Glen Star and Maori Boy together) were the first to turn for home ahead of Flying Juliet, Desert Glow, The Lover, Queen Arch and Royal Doulton. The favourite was in front at the distance, but Royal Doulton came with a great dash and beat him by a neck. Only half a length further back was Queen Arch, who ran a sound race. Glen Star was fourth, and after him came The Lover, Maori Boy and Flying Juliet. The winner put up a fine performance.
