CABLE BREAK MENDED
IRIS AT WELLINGTON WEEK IN COOK STRAIT Press Association WELLINGTON, To-day. The cable steamer Iris has finished her work in Cook Strait and will probably return to Auckland to-morrow. She arrived her on Monday. February 25, and took in a supply of cable. She left on the following day for Cook Strait and grappled for the cable, which was picked up. but after about a mile had been inspected it was carried away, and engineers discovered they had been dealing with only a section, the cable being broken in two places.
Work was held up by unsuitable weather until last Saturday, when another start was made. The end of the cable was pulled up, and about eight miles was laid toward Lyall Bay. On Sunday additional supplies were taken on board, and on Monday about; seven miles was picked up and laid down again. A buoy was left to mark the end and the Jris proceeded to work from White Bay toward the buoy, which was reached yesterday. The weather during the past week was good.
