REFUSED £7,000 A YEAR
MUSICIAN AND CINEMA CONSCIENTIOUS REASONS (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) LONDON, Thursday. Dr. Malcolm Sargent, conductor-in-chief of the Royal Choral Society’, has refused an offer of £ 7,000 a year to become musical director at a West End cinema. His duties there would have been to conduct at three 10minute sessions a day.
In explaining his refusal of the position Dr. Sargent says that while he wishes to hear better music in cinemas he cannot see how a 10-minute piece played before a picture is going to attract the special interest of musical people. Sir Thomas Beecham, famous conductor, ways he agrees with Dr. Sargent. He dislikes cinemas intensely and only goes to them when he is dragged there by friends. . Mr. Eric Coates , composer, and others state on the other hand that they regret Dr. Sargent’s decision. They think the cinema requires the influence of musical personalities.
