CHILD ENDOWMENT SCHEME REJECTED

WOULD WEAKEN PARENTAL CONTROL AND RAISE TAXES

Reed. 9.5 a.m. CANBERRA, To-daj,'. A Federal scheme for child endowment has been rejected by the Royal Commission which has taken evidence in all the States for many months.

The majority report against the scheme declares that the advocates of family assistance had not established the fact that wages are insufficient,

while an allowance of 10s a week for all dependent children under 14 years of age would require an expenditure of £50,000,000 a year. This would make the Federal income tax live and a-half times greater than at present, causing disastrous reactions, as well as removing from the parents financial responsibility for their children, and weakening parental responsibility.
